Cozy Living Room Design Ideas

Your living room may be small, but that doesn’t mean it has to feel cramped. Here are some ideas to turn tight living rooms into cozy ones.

Circular Patterns

A lot of the best ways to make your living room cozier involve playing with the illusion of space. You can make it look like there is more space than there really is, giving rooms the feeling of extra space. While it won’t actually add more room to the area, it will help you feel less not as confined.

One of the better ways to do that in your living room is to add a central rug with large circular patterns. These can be concentric circles or a spiral pattern, but either way, it helps the sense of space to undulate out from that central point. If you arrange the furniture around that rug, facing its center, it can really add to the illusion.

Packed with Memories

Another way to go with cozying up your living room is to fill the space with heirlooms, photos and other things that evoke memories. You can add in small bookcases or shelves around the room and fill them up with things that remind you of the past or that display your family and ancestry. While this actually takes up some of the precious space, it can make the room feel bigger as each corner holds precious memories that will send your mind to far off times and places. You won’t see the walls as much since you will be focusing more on what’s hanging on them.

Handcrafted and Hand-Painted

Sometimes, the way to make a room cozier is to add a personal touch. Handmade items or hand-painted ones can really add some flair to a room and make it feel much more inviting. A favorite of ours for this category would be hand-painted bookcases. Wooden bookcases that are painted stylishly can become conversation pieces and make your living room seem far more inviting. They don’t quite look professionally done or cookie cutter, and that makes everyone feel like they can be themselves just a bit more and open up, creating a cozier atmosphere.

Bring in Nature

What could be cozier than flowers and beautiful plants? Your living room may be small, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be sparse or boring. You can add a few bouquets or a hanging plant or two to spruce up a small living room space. Bringing the outdoors inside is a great way to make the room much warmer and friendly. Even a really natural-looking plastic plant can do the trick. Just be careful about using colors that are too bold or too distracting and try to go for softer, warmer shades when you pick out the perfect plants and flowers.
